About the Lishman Health Research

Lishman Health Research is an independently funded not-for-profit organisation. It specifically supports regional health and is funded by sponsors, grants, donations and a range of fundraising activities.

Lishman Health Research funds, facilitates and promotes health research that has significant health gain for individuals, families and communities living in regional Australia.

Lishman Health Research supports regional health in four key areas:

  1. Research Governance for Healthy Outcomes
  2. Effective Community Engagement and Partnerships
  3. Sourcing Funds to Support Research
  4. From Research to Health Promotion

Lishman Health Research was established in 1997, largely by health professionals and Rotarians. Initially the Val Lishman Health Research Foundation, it was named to honour the inspirational work of Dr Val Lishman, the first specialist surgeon to practise in south-west Western Australia. The Foundation is guided by Dr Lishman’s example of selfless service and concern for holistic health.

Lishman Health Research shortened its name in 2016 for ease of use while continuing to reflect Lishman Health Research’s aim of advocating for and promoting research. Lishman Health Research is a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-For-Profits Commission (ACNC). Lishman Health was incorporated in 1997 and is endorsed as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) List 1, meaning that all donations over $2 are fully tax deductible.

It is the belief of Lishman Health Research that health research helps the community in the following ways:

  • Local research seeks answers to local health problems, benefiting the whole community
  • Health research attracts and retains quality health professionals in the region through career opportunity and prestige of research
  • Health research is a significant world–wide industry. We are building a South West-based research industry through organisation, training and employment
  • Employment & robust health research projects promote economic benefit by retaining research donations within the regions while attracting external grants

Research Management Committee:

Research Management Committee (RMC) members volunteer their time to identify and develop the scope for research and health promotion projects that have the potential to be funded by Lishman Health Research. The RMC aims to endorse a stream of high quality health research and health promotion projects consistent with the vision, mission and values of Lishman Health Research.

The RMC scrutinise any potential research project and subject it to a rigorous selection procedure. Every aspect of the project is examined including aims and objectives, research methodology, ethics protocol, as well as the qualifications and previous experience of chief and associate investigators. Only projects of the highest caliber receive funding from Lishman Health Research.

The RMC oversees and provides advice on both small and large scale projects funded by Lishman Health Research, ensuring that the projects undertaken result in peer reviewed publications and findings that benefit health practice and regional populations. Large scale projects are coordinated through Project Advisory Committees (PAC). The RMC will identify and recruit PAC members who have the knowledge, skills and availability to contribute to the successful management of the research projects. The RMC acts under the control of the Board, which must approve projects, strategies and other initiatives proposed by the RMC, and associated funding requirements, prior to implementation.
